Technology Glitches Delay Amazon Go Opening

SEATTLE — Amazon.com is delaying the public opening of Amazon Go, its first cashier-free convenience store that automatically charges customers as they leave, due to technical complications.

Amazon Go uses cameras, sensors and algorithms to watch customers and track the items they pick up, according to sources familiar with the matter. However, Amazon is facing difficulties tracking more than around 20 people in the store at a time and keeping tabs on items once they have been moved from their specific spot on the shelf, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Currently, Amazon's technology functions perfectly only if there are a small number of people inside the store or if their movements are slow, according to the report.

Following a test phase with Amazon employees in December, the Seattle store was scheduled to open to the public by the end of March. A new opening date has not been announced.
