Three Opportunities to Better Understand FDA's Deeming Rule

NATIONAL REPORT — The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) first steps in regulating electronic cigarettes, cigars, hookah tobacco and pipe tobacco go into effect on Aug. 8, but the tobacco industry does not have to go it alone. Several resources are available to tobacco product manufacturers and retailers to help them better understand the FDA's finalized deeming rule, which was released May 5.

The FDA's Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) is offering a series of webinars to help the industry understand the recently finalized rule extending the agency's authority to all tobacco products. Some of the webinars are designed for specific audiences — tobacco retailers, vape shops, or manufacturers and importers, for example — to help them understand and comply with the new rule.

The webinar series includes two live question-and-answer sessions, the first for retailers on May 25 and the second for manufacturers on a date to be announced soon. For more information on these webinars, click here.

In addition, the Tobacco Merchants Association (TMA) is hosting a daylong event with legal, scientific and regulatory affairs experts who will address the applications that tobacco companies must now file with the CTP to keep products on the market.

The June 9 TMA program will begin with a morning session of five to six panels, each addressing a different aspect of the FDA deeming rule and each with a legal, scientific and regulatory affairs expert. Breakout sessions in the afternoon by product sectors — premium and machine-made cigars, pipe tobacco and e-vapor products — will let manufacturers talk strategy with additional experts and colleagues.

The TMA event will take place at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Va. For more details, click here.

Finally, Vapor Expo International will also offer a legislative overview of the tobacco industry with Bryan Haynes, partner at Troutman Sanders law firm, as part of its show agenda. Haynes will provide an overview of the electronic cigarette regulatory environment, including an update on FDA proposals and state regulatory initiatives.

The Vapor Expo International show takes place June 15-16 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. The regulatory overview will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on June 15. For more information, click here
