Wawa Asks Public to Help Decide 2017 Hero Award

WAWA, Pa. — After receiving more than 125 submissions, The Wawa Foundation Inc. has announced the finalists for its 2017 “Hero Award,” and Wawa is asking the public to help choose a winner.

Now through June 29, Wawa fans can cast their votes on www.TheWawaFoundation.org. The organization that receives the most votes will be presented to The Wawa Foundation Hero Award Panel for final approval. The winning organization will receive a $50,000 grant and the three runners-up will each receive $10,000 grants.

The four finalists are:

  1. Emily’s Entourage — Raises money and awareness to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis with a focus on rare mutations.
  2. Operation Yellow Ribbon South Jersey — Supports United States military service members in the Middle East.
  3. Lighthouse Inc. — Provides educational, recreational and economic improvement programs to families and individuals across North Philadelphia communities.
  4. West Philadelphia Alliance for Children — Promotes childhood literacy by engaging volunteers in Philadelphia public schools through reopening and staffing libraries and offering academic mentoring to students in need.

According to The Wawa Foundation, the Hero Award is an honor that is given to a non-profit organization serving the greater Philadelphia area that assists others and builds stronger communities through “preserving our independence, protecting our safety and mentoring and inspiring our youth.”

To apply for the Hero Award, nonprofits submitted a video and/or a short story to The Wawa Foundation website that provided background on their work with, and impact on, the community. From there, The Wawa Foundation Grant Committee selected four stories with the best fit to the award focus area and criteria.

The 2017 Hero Award will be presented as part of Wawa Welcome America!’s Independence Day morning ceremony on July 4 in front of Independence Hall.

Wawa operates more than 700 convenience stores in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida.
