Clark Retail Enterprises Honored

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Clark Retail Enterprises Inc. has been named Special Olympics Illinois' Outstanding Organization of the Year for its support of the charitable organization.

Clark was selected by a committee to determine which nominee demonstrated the spirit of Special Olympics. Jeff Jones, chief financial officer for Clark, accepted the honor at a reception June 21.

In 1998, Clark named Special Olympics its official charity affiliation. Clark is recognized as a Statewide Sponsor in Illinois and Official Supporter throughout the Great Lakes for Special Olympics. Clark has more than 800 stores in nine Midwest states, including 300 stores throughout Illinois, the company said in a statement.

Clark has assisted Special Olympics through fund-raising, recruiting volunteers and aiding in public awareness. In 2001, Clark raised $200,000 in support of Special Olympics throughout the region, and $90,000 was raised specifically for Special Olympics Illinois. One of Clark's primary public awareness and fund-raising vehicles has been the sale of die-cut icons in the shape of a Special Olympics medal. The medal promotion, currently in its fourth year, runs through July.

In addition to fund-raising, Clark employees are regular volunteers at various Special Olympics events. Last year, two employees personally solicited and collected $12,700 in pledges for Special Olympics based on their completion of the Chicago Marathon.
