Marijuana-Themed Candies Cause a Stink

ATLANTA -- Anti-drug advocates are setting their sights on marijuana-flavored candies with names such as Purple Haze, Acapulco Gold and Rasta that have been popping up at convenience stores nationwide, reports the Associated Press.

Georgia state Sen. Vincent Fort has already persuaded some convenience stores in the state to stop selling the drug-themed candies, and merchants have been advised to sell only to customers 18 and older.

“It's nothing but dope candy, and that's nothing we need to be training our children to do,” Fort said.

The confections, while controversial, are legal to sell because they are made with hemp oil, a common ingredient in health foods and other household products that impart marijuana's grassy taste but not the high.

Merchants contend that the candies are a harmless novelty made for adults.

“There are more than 70 million people in the United States who smoke marijuana,” said Rick Watkins, marketing director for Corona, Calif.-based Chronic Candy. “We're catering to the audience of people who are in that smoking culture.”

Another company called Hydro Blunts, based in Atlanta, markets a similar product called Kronic Kandy, which is made in the Netherlands.

New York City Councilwoman Margarita Lopez proposed a resolution condemning the candies when she saw them in her district at convenience stores in close proximity of nearby schools. Lopez said she plans to hold hearings this summer.
