M&M's Pretzel Takes Home Top Prize

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- M&M's Pretzel Chocolate Candy was awarded the 2011 Product of the Year in the candy and snacks category. Mars Chocolate North America took home the top prize in the category last night, Feb. 8.

"This award is especially gratifying because it was decided by consumers," said Debra A. Sandler, chief consumer officer of Mars Chocolate North America. "We felt confident that the delicious combination of salty and sweet was a winner, but this award solidifies that M&M's Pretzel are truly irresistible."

Product of the Year is hosted in 28 countries and is the world's largest consumer-voted program that recognizes innovation in consumer-packaged goods. Finalists were judged on appeal of innovation, usage, satisfaction and purchase intent. According to Mars Chocolate North America, the candy -- which hit convenience store shelves this past summer -- garnered high marks across the board, particularly in satisfaction. The company added that consumers pointed to the combination of sweet and salty flavors as a key driver behind their vote, as well as the fact that the M&M's Pretzel contain 30 percent less fat, on average, than other chocolate snacks.

In the fall, M&M's Pretzel took top honors for chocolate candy in the 14th annual Convenience Store News Best New Product Awards competition, as CSNews Online previously reported.
