Tax on Snacks Axed
Texan lawmakers have scrapped plans for a 3-percent surcharge on snack foods such as chips and sodas, according to the Waco Herald Tribune.
But a closed-door meeting between the leaders of the House and Senate produced no consensus on how to raise sales and business taxes to replace billions of dollars in reduced school property taxes. The removal of the snack tax, which the House approved in March but the Senate never took seriously, was the only agreement on taxes that both sides said they had reached, the newspaper said.
