Sheetz Nabs "Best Places to Work in PA" Title
ALTOONA, Pa. -- The best retailer to work for in Pennsylvania is Sheetz Inc., according to The Best Places to Work in PA group's 2009 rankings, which were recently announced in Hershey, Pa. Sheetz was listed at No. 25 in the ranking of top 50 large companies.
The convenience store chain was once again the No. 1 restaurant and service retailer to make the list. This is the eighth consecutive year Sheetz has received this honor.
"We are humbled to be considered for this honor each year. To be named one of the best employers in the state means a great deal because it comes from our employees," Stephanie Doliveira, vice president of human resources, said in a statement. "We have terrific people who make Sheetz a great place to work. We thank them for all that they do to help us deliver quality convenience to our busy customers every day."
The Best Places to Work in PA program is designed to help companies improve their workplace practices in order to attract and retain the best employees possible. It is open to all publicly or privately held organizations, both for-profit and nonprofit. The companies must have a facility in Pennsylvania, at least 25 employees in the state, and be in good standing with all Commonwealth agencies under the governor's jurisdiction.
The assessment process is comprised of a two-part survey in which employees are asked to evaluate their workplace experience, and the employer is asked to describe its company's benefits, policies and practices along with other information.
"One of our main of objectives is to ensure our people have a good working environment. We want our employees to enjoy coming to work," Doliveira stated. "We are always exploring ways to improve the experience for both our customers and our employees. It's great to know that they are as happy with us as we are with them."
Perks such as quarterly bonuses, all-expense paid trips to celebrate milestone anniversaries with the company, and employee stock ownership programs all help to set Sheetz apart from the competition, according to the c-store retailer.
Based in Altoona, Pa., Sheetz operates more than 360 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. The chain had more than $3.7 billion in revenue for 2009 and more than 13,000 employees.
